Shayne Wulterin, a partner with the firm, is a trial lawyer whose practice is centered on construction and product defect litigation, large injury losses, toxic tort and mold claims, and the investigation of fraudulent and suspect claims. He also has extensive experience defending automobile and general liability cases involving catastrophic injuries. He defends corporations, private individuals and insurance companies, with special emphasis on the defense of high-profile construction companies, developers, general contractors and subcontractors.
Mr. Wulterin has been with Ford, Walker, Haggerty & Behar since 1994. He began his legal career with a defense firm in the Inland Empire. He has been a partner at Ford, Walker, Haggerty & Behar since 2000, serving on many advisory and management committees for the firm.
In addition to his trial work, Mr. Wulterin has extensive experience with court-ordered and binding arbitration and mediation. He has tried several cases, representing large companies and individuals. In a recent court case, he defended an ink manufacturer who was sued for one million dollars in damages. He obtained a defense verdict with no payment to the plaintiff. Mr. Wulterin is skillful in finding ways to protect his clients' interests while minimizing their costs. He uses alternative dispute resolution when advantageous to resolve matters before trial.
A member of the State Bar of California since 1991, he is admitted to practice in the United States District Court, Central and Northern Districts. He is a member of the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel, the Los Angeles County Bar Association and the Defense Research Institute. He is additionally admitted to practice in the states of Nevada and Colorado, and founded the firm's Nevada office in 2001.
Representative clients in Nevada include the Automobile Club of Southern California, The Hertz Corporation, Zurich North America, Claremont Liability and Robison-Prezioso, Inc.
Mr. Wulterin is a regularly featured guest speaker and presents to legal professionals, insurance companies and risk managers on various legal topics and issues. He recently was a featured speaker for Lorman's Educational Centers on How Design Documents Can Prevent or Cause Construction Claims against Government Entities. He also presents regularly to insurers on how to handle civil litigation in the State of Nevada.
Mr. Wulterin received his J.D. in 1991 from Whittier College of Law, where he was a member of the Moot Court Honors Society and the American Trial Lawyers Association. He obtained his B.A. in economics/business in 1988 from Westmont College, where he earned both an athletic and academic scholarship and graduated magna cum laude. As an undergraduate, he earned All America honors as a scholar/athlete in soccer. He continues to play semiprofessional soccer in the Los Angeles area.
Born in San Pedro, California, Mr. Wulterin lives with his wife, Lisa, and their sons, Dashiell McLain and Brevin Patrick in Orange Hills.
